ABSTRACT:BackgroundObjective:Primarydysmenorrhoea(PD)isdefinedastheoccurrenceofpainfulmenstrualcrampsofuterineoriginwhichoccursintheabsenceofanyunderlyingdisease.Thepathogenesisisunclear,bututerinehyperactivity,elevatedprostaglandinandleukotrieneslevels,andhormonallevelfluctuationshaveallbeenimplicated.TheobjectiveofthisstudywastoevaluatetheeffectofTENSonthehormonescortisolandprolactininindividualswithPD.
Conclusion:TheprobablemechanismbywhichTENSeffectedalterationsincortisolandprolactinlevelsandpainreductioninsubjectswithPDmightbethroughtheopioid-modulatinganalgesiasystem,whichreleasesB-endorphinsandotherendogenousopiatesinresponsetopain.ThisisbecausetheseisacloserelationshipbetweenB-endorphin,cortisolandneurons,whichsecretedopamineintothehypothalamic-pituitary-portalsystem.
